Trees Are Natural Air Purifiers

In a report by the U.S. Forest Service in 2011, Forests worldwide were responsible for removing about a third of the yearly fossil fuels emitted between 1990 and 2007. Trees remove pollution from the atmosphere and improve the quality of the air we breathe. This is fantastic news. Plus, roadside trees can reduce indoor air pollution in area buildings by more than 50%. Trees are filtering out dangerous contaminants on a daily basis.

Fierce Fighters Against Climate Change

Trees actively absorb harmful carbon dioxide, retain the carbon, and release clean oxygen back into the air. Throughout the year, an acre of mature trees can absorb the amount of carbon dioxide equal to what a car driven 26,000 miles would produce. One mature tree can absorb over 48 pounds of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere over a year and transform it into oxygen. Comparatively, when a machine burns one gallon of non-ethanol gasoline, it produces about 20 pounds of carbon dioxide.

We Rely on Trees to Deliver Oxygen

Trees filter out harmful particles in the air, and a large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for four people. The Amazon Rainforest is responsible for 20% of the world’s oxygen. In addition to providing much-needed oxygen, trees play an active role in improving mental health. A South Korean study in 2007 at Chungbuk National University found that office workers with a view of trees had significantly less stress and more satisfaction than those without.
